Alternative Knowledge - Research & Workshop Series
This project aims to provide an environment for learning to engage with alternative forms of knowledge production and circulation. Drawing on Donna Haraway’s feminist doctrine of situated knowledge (1988), the impulse behind this research group is to study global emergent media integrating a methodological practice that accounts for location, embodiment, and power differentials shaping the communities that produce media. This research group offers to delve into the full potential of an alternative approach, not in comparison to Western knowledge but as a stand-alone method, while navigating the disjunctures it creates within academic knowledge production. The aim of this project, thus, is to create a laboratory where ‘alternative knowledge’ can be critically and creatively embraced by a community of students, instructors, and researchers that find themselves reflecting on and struggling with their methodologies in approaching their objects of study. Collectively, we will reflect on questions such as:
What can we gain from decentering our perspective?
How can we frame our research in ways that evade the neoliberal tendencies of capture and instrumentality?
How do we approach models for representing our research other than writing?
What kind of pedagogical practices can we embrace, as film and media instructors, to avoid Western-centric modes of thoughts and introduce alternative objects, theories, and methods?
Part reading group, part workshop series, this group is designed to favour a hands-on approach of alternative knowledge. As such, each meeting will be focusing simultaneously on a methodology and on an object (movie clip, media content, podcast, website, etc.), led by an invited presenter. This way, participants will get to experiment with modes of production and diffusion relating to a specific object.

The research group will meet monthly, on Fridays, from 5 to 7pm

We aim at creating a consistent group of participants in order to establish together a collective set of questions that we want to explore together. That is why we would ask some form of commitment from participants in attending all the meetings.

Once you write to us, we will share a dropbox where you will find suggested readings for each meeting.
